    Cleft and Craniofacial Patient Singer

    Mathias had bilateral cleft lip and palate when both sides of his lip from his mouth to his nose were open along with the roof of his mouth or palate. Stanford PRS's Dr. Rohit Khosla has performed five surgeries for Mathias, the first when Mathias was an infant.

    Jaramillo Wins AAST Scholarship

    General Surgery Resident Dr. Josh Jaramillo has been awarded a scholarship to attend the 78th Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) and Clinical Congress of Acute Care Surgery in Dallas.

    HPB Fellow Receives Grant

    Dr. Patrick Worth, Stanford Surgery's outgoing Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary fellow, received a grant from the Brenden-Colson Center for Pancreatic Care. The $250,000 in funding will allow him to study neuroendocrine heterogeneity in pancreatic cancer over the next two years.

    GenSurg Resident Dr. Sue Fu Receives 2 Grants

    General Surgery Resident Dr. Sue Fu was award two grants to fund her salary during her professional development years while she earns a Masters in Health Policy. Dr. Fu was awarded the VA Health Services Fellowship, a two-year funding award through the Department of Veterans Affairs as well as the Professional Development Research Grant through the Stanford Department of Surgery. In addition to out-of-pocket costs of cancer care, she will study the effects of Medicaid expansion on costs and outcomes of trauma and ACS surgery.

    LPCH ranks #1 for Kidney Transplant Graft

    According to a new report from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR), Stanford Children's Health at LPCH (CAPC) had the best outcomes in the nation for 1-year kidney transplant graft survival. The report also noted that Stanford Health Care's (CASU) patient survival at 1 year was 100%.

    Dr. Esquivel Awarded Collaboration Grant

    Dr. Carlos Esquivel, chief of the division of abdominal transplantation, in conjunction with Intermountain Healthcare General Surgeon Dr. Manuel Rodriguez-Davalos has been awarded an Intermountain-Stanford Collaboration Grant. The almost $100,000 will fund their proposal “Advanced Quantitative Modeling Techniques to Enhance the Use of Segmental Grafts in Liver Transplantation” for the next year starting December 1.

    Dr. Byrne Lee will be joining the Department of Surgery, Division of General Surgery in the Section of Surgical Oncology as Clinical Professor effective October 1st, 2019.

    Dr. Pugh Receives AWS Award

    Dr. Carla Pugh, a professor in the Division of General Surgery and Director of the TECI Center, was selected as one of the 2019 Olga Jonasson Distinguished Member Award recipients.

    Dr. Jared Forrester Receives SIS Award

    General Surgery Resident Dr. Jared Forrester has been awarded First Place Resident Award Oral Presentation by the Surgical Infection Society (SIS) for his talk “Clean Cut Outcomes in Ethiopia: Improving surgical quality and decreasing postoperative infections.”

    Dr. Hawn joins SHC Board

    Department of Surgery Chair Dr. Mary Hawn will join the Stanford Health Care (SHC) Board of Directors. According to its by-laws, the SHC Board has a myriad of responsibilities from long-range strategic planning to maintaining facilities and adopting budgets. Dr. Hawn's three-year term will start in January 2020.

    GenSurg Resident Wins Teaching Award

    General Surgery Chief Resident Aleah Brubaker, MD, PhD received the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching at the annual Stanford School of Medicine Awards on June 16.

    Stanford Surgery Graduates 10 Residents

    Stanford Department of Surgery graduated 10 residents this June; six from the Division of General Surgery, three from the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and one from the Division of Vascular Surgery.

    Asian Liver Center Wins CGHE Photo Contest

    The Asian Liver Center was awarded the grand prize in the Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination's Photo Contest. Jasmine Koon, a graphic designer with the center, photographed an obstetrician from the Weiyuan township hospital speaking with a soon-to-be-mother in the local dialect. The Asian Liver Center launched the "Love From Birthday" program to educate women and physicians about Hepatitis B and liver cancer.

    Dr. Chan Awarded AFAR/ANRF Grant

    Dr. Charles Chan, an assistant professor in the Division of Plastic Surgery, has been awarded an Arthritis and Aging Research Grant. The $150,000 grant is sponsored by the American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR) and the Arthritis National Research Foundation (ANRF) and will fund their research identifying a way to resurface osteoarthritic joints with new cartilage.

    Dr. Curtin Promoted to Professor of Surgery

    Dr. Catherine Curtin has been promoted to professor of surgery. Dr. Curtin has been with Stanford's Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery for more than 10 years. Her clinical focus is peripheral nerve surgery and upper limb reconstruction.

    Dr. Melcher Receives 2018-19 Award for Outstanding Contribution to GME for Program Directors

    Dr. Marc Melcher, an associate professor in the Division of Abdominal Transplantation, was selected as the recipient of Stanford's 2018-19 Award for Outstanding Contribution to GME for Program Directors.
