November 16, 2020

Lifebox, the international safer surgery nonprofit, has received a Gates Grand Challenge Award with Dr. Tom Weiser as Principal Investigator. The $300,000 in funds from the UBS Optimus Foundation will support a cluster-randomized, stepped wedge trial of Lifebox's Clean Cut Program adopted for cesarean delivery.

"We will be running this at 10 facilities (5 clusters of 2 hospitals each) in Ethiopia," wrote Weiser. "We have partnered with the Ethiopian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and they are very excited, and our ground team is keen as well."

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is part of the Grand Challenges partnership network. According to their website "Grand Challenges is a family of initiatives fostering innovation to solve key global health and development problems."
