Momeni et al Win PRS Best Paper Award

September 23, 2020

Dr. Arash Momeni and his co-authors have received the best paper award for their manuscript “A Matched-Pair Analysis of Prepectoral with Subpectoral Breast Reconstruction” from Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

"We were able to demonstrate that the minimally-invasive approach to implant-based breast reconstruction, i.e. prepectoral reconstruction, whereby the device is placed on top of the pectoralis major muscle, thus, leaving it unharmed, is a safe reconstructive modality following mastectomy," said Momeni. "This is particularly relevant as the more commonly performed reconstructive approach to implant-based breast reconstruction places the device under the pectoralis major muscle (i.e. sub pectoral reconstruction), thus, mandating its partial detachment from the chest wall."

Additionally, the researchers were able to demonstrate that prolonged antibiotic coverage post-discharge is not associated with a beneficial effect when compared to peri-operative prophylaxis for <24hours only.

The editorial and publishing staff scoured data for all manuscripts published in 2019 to determine the number of times each article was read on Ovid and on PRSJournal.com (combined Full-Text and PDF usage) for the 16 months following article publication. This 16-month data was combined to create an average score for each manuscript, placing them on equal footing, independent of publication month. The articles were sorted by score and selected based on pre-existing categories.

According to Rod J. Rohrich, MD, editor-in-chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery this "paper was, by a distinct margin, the best paper in [its] category."

Momeni and his fellow authors, Drs. Austin Remington, Derrick Wan, Dung Nguyen, and Geoffrey Gurtner will be officially presented with the award at the virtual Plastic Surgery - The Meeting next month.
