Dr. Klarin Receives ASCI Young Physician-Scientist Award

February 13, 2023

Dr. Derek Klarin is the recipient of The American Society for Clinical Investigation's Young Physician-Scientist Award. According to Colleen McGarry, program director for the ASCI, Dr. Klarin was selected for this recognition based on his early-career achievements.

"This is an outstanding recognition of Dr. Klarin's career focus and potential in vascular disease management," said Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs and former Chief of Vascular Surgery Dr. Ron Dalman.

The ASCI's Young Physician-Scientist Award is given annually to physician-scientists who are early in their first faculty appointment. As part of this recognition, Dr. Klarin will get to attend 2023 AAP/ASCI/APSA Joint Meeting as well as "panel discussions, peer review groups, and other career development and mentorship opportunities" throughout this year and next.

“Since I started my research career, I’ve always focused on the translational aims of each of my projects. The ASCI is a society focused on the translational relevance of an investigator’s work, and I hope to enhance that even further through this award," said Klarin. "I have been fortunate to have amazing mentors help me get me to this point, and hope that this program will help foster new ones and continue to promote growth in my career.”

Dr. Klarin is an assistant professor in the Division of Vascular Surgery. His research is focused on risk factors for peripheral artery disease, the benefits of ultrasound screening for abdominal aortic aneurysms, and the impact of genetic variations on cardiovascular disease.
