GSEC Reaccredited by ACS

February 28, 2020

The Goodman Surgical Education Center (GSEC) was reaccredited for the next five years by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Per the site visit and accreditation report, the GSEC exceeded the standards for how surgical education and training should be offered at accredited educational institutes.

Staff, fellows, and faculty directors compiled an extensive report detailing various components of the GSEC and how the main focus is to enhance education and training based on the needs of faculty, residents, fellows, medical students and outside learner groups.

The site visitor, Dr. Alexander Perez, MD, FACS, noted that "the Goodman Center provides extensive training that addresses the needs of core competencies such as cognitive, psychomotor, affective and team training." He also stated that an example of one of the best practices is "the Central Venous Line training program. Video tutorials with mentored small group hands-on training and feedback are utilized, and the procedure is video recorded on a mannequin for objective assessment rating with a checklist. This is mandatory for PGY 1 residents to pass in order to perform on patients and to progress to PGY 2."

The GSEC was also recognized for its Interprofessional Education curriculum. This program utilizes the expertise of general surgery residents, the anesthesia team, and OR staff to improve patient safety and outcomes through teamwork, communication, and professionalism.

According to the performance report: "ACS-Accredited Education Institutes (ACS-AEIs) undergo a rigorous application and evaluation process to ensure standards for all phases of learning. Stanford Department of Surgery Education Institute has maintained its strong track record of delivering effective education in simulation, and we look forward to ongoing contributions to the Consortium and the field of simulation-based surgical education and training."
