Dr. Nguyen receives James IV Traveling Fellowship

December 3, 2019

Dr. Dung Nguyen, a clinical associate professor in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, has been awarded a traveling fellowship from the James IV Association of Surgeons. The fellowship covers four weeks of travel and a $15,000 stipend.

"The mission is to promote the exchange of knowledge and foster communication and collaboration across our surgical community! It is a wonderful opportunity to learn from experts around the world and also to share our own expertise!" said Nguyen.

Nguyen says she plans to visit Dr. Susan E. Reid at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada; Dr. Michael Kerin at the National University of Ireland in Galway, Ireland; Dr. Robert Mansel at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, United Kingdom; and Professor Keith Gardiner, Chief Executive and Postgraduate Medical Dean of the Northern Ireland Medical & Dental Training Agency.

"I hope to glean insights into how these surgeons and their reconstructive colleagues address some of the universal challenges of breast surgery," said Nguyen. "[Drs. Reid and Gardiner] are known to have developed very successful training models for trainees that teach them leadership and management skills to be leaders early on in their training. I hope to bring back pearls of wisdom to make positive change in our training programs."

Nguyen says she incredibly grateful to Department Chair Dr. Mary Hawn for the nomination and Drs. Jeffrey Norton and Jim Chang for their support.
