Original CCSB surgeon Dr. Bertelsen Retires

September 25, 2019

Breast surgeon Dr. Carl Bertelsen has announced his retirement effective September 30, 2019. Bertelsen was the first surgeon recruited to practice at Stanford’s new Cancer Center South Bay (CCSB) in 2013.

“Dr. Bertelsen has transformed CCSB into the thriving breast center of today,” said Dr. Jeff Norton, who was Chief of General Surgery and Surgical Oncology for a majority of Bertelsen’s time at Stanford. “Certainly, his patients and referring doctors all know him for his clinical excellence in patient care of breast disease especially breast cancer.”

Bertelsen practiced general surgery with a focus in breast surgery since 1987. A native of the Bay Area, Bertelsen attended Los Gatos High School before graduating from Stanford University with honors. He did his medical education at the University of Cincinnati where he was AOA and then came back to California to complete his residency in general surgery at UCLA. He was president of the San Jose Surgical Society in 1993, Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital in 1994, and on various boards of directors throughout his surgical career.

“He will be missed, but we wish him continued happiness in his retirement as he enters new challenges and opportunities,” said Norton.

Bertelsen says he looks forward to spending more time in Tahoe and that he plans to sail the South Pacific on his x-yacht.
