Dr. Poultsides Receives R01

Dr. George Poultsides

Dr. George Poultsides is the primary investigator on a new R01 from the NIH National Cancer Institute. The more than $2M grant will fund his project “Highly Sensitive Detection of Occult Pancreatic Cancer Using Intraoperative Molecular Imaging.”

The grant will fund a Stanford-only prospective clinical trial of 40 patients undergoing surgery for pancreatic cancer.

“A specific fluorescent molecular dye and near-infrared cameras will be used to detect small (1-3 mm3) pancreatic cancer tumor foci, which are far below the current threshold of detection of the most sophisticated imaging modalities,” said Poultsides.

Preliminary data to support this proposal were generated through support from a 2020 Stanford Department of Surgery Faculty Seed Grant.

Poultsides is Chief of the Surgical Oncology Section, which is part of Stanford’s Division of General Surgery and serves as Physician Lead of the GI Oncology Clinical Research Program at the Stanford Cancer Institute.

Rachel holds a Bachelor's degree in journalism with a focus on photography from Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. A transplant from the DC-area, she still misses foliage and argyle but has happily adopted the official NorCal hobbies of visiting wineries, hiking local trails, and eating avocado.
