Seib Receives AVAS Visiting Professorship Award

Dr. Carolyn Seib is a recipient of the Visiting Professorship Award from the Association of VA Surgeons (AVAS). Her host institution will be the University of Wisconsin, Madison. 

"I am currently at a critical point in my academic career, having recently received career development award funding that will provide 5 years of protected time to expand my research program and establish myself as a leader in academic surgery," wrote Seib in her application. "In order to attract meaningful attention to my research program, it is critical that I have the opportunity to disseminate my work at high-quality academic institutions like those participating in the AVAS Visiting Professorship Program. This program would allow me to engage with and receive critical feedback from VA surgeons and researchers with expertise distinct from that of my current collaborators and potentially establish new partnerships that will expand the breadth of my research."

In recent years, Seib's research has focused on the management of primary hyperparathyroidism, a common endocrine disorder of aging that is associated with morbidity related to osteoporotic fractures, kidney stones, and neurocognitive symptoms.

The Visiting Professorship Award is part of AVAS's commitment to DEI. This is the second year of the program and was awarded to four surgeons, Assistant or Associate Professor level, that were within the first 10 years of their faculty appointment. The award includes reimbursement to cover travel and accommodation expenses to the host institution and opportunities to present grand rounds, meetings with hospital and departmental leadership, surgical trainee panels, etc.

Seib is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of General Surgery. As a fellowship-trained endocrine surgeon, she specializes in surgery of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands. She also serves as the Director of Geriatric Surgery Quality at the VA Palo Alto.

As the Director of Communications for Stanford Surgery, Rachel Baker tells the stories of her department's faculty, staff, and trainees. With the help of an amazing team of content creators, she produces and curates original articles, photos, videos, graphics, and even podcasts.She works personally with each division, center, program, and lab within her purview to define their audience and reach their goals while maintaining a consistent brand voice. She also offers both 1:1 and group education to faculty and residents on a variety of topics including media training, using social media to advantage, and presentation refinement. Rachel holds a Bachelor's degree in journalism with a focus on photography from Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. A transplant from the DC-area, she still misses foliage and argyle but has happily adopted the official NorCal hobbies of visiting wineries, hiking local trails, and eating avocado.
