Dr. Hameed Joins Stanford Surgery as Next Trauma Chief

Dr. Morad Hameed joined Stanford Surgery as Chief of Trauma and Critical Care Surgery effective January 1, 2024.

“We are delighted to have Dr. Hameed join us to lead our outstanding Acute Care Surgery program. He is an innovative leader with a great track record of mentoring the next generation and developing new models of care,” said Dr. Electron Kebebew, chief of the Division of General Surgery.

Hameed earned his medical degree and completed his general surgery residency at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. He went on to pursue two fellowships one in surgical critical care and one in trauma surgery at the University of Miami in Florida. Hameed also has an Masters Degree in Quantitative Method’s from Harvard University’s School of Public Health.

Hameed has most recently been working at the University of British Columbia where he served at the Chief of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery from 2014-2017 before assuming the role of Chief of the Division of General Surgery.

Hameed takes over at Stanford from Dr. David A. Spain, who has served as Chief for the past 22 years. During Spain’s tenure Stanford was reverified a Level 1 Trauma Center multiple times, opened the Chest Wall Injury Center, and started the Surgeons Writing About Trauma Journal Club.

“We are thankful to Dr. Spain for his tremendous leadership over the last 22 years and bringing our program to national preeminence,” said Kebebew. “We look forward to Dr. Hameed and colleagues to build on his great legacy.”

As the Director of Communications for Stanford Surgery, Rachel Baker tells the stories of her department's faculty, staff, and trainees. Rachel holds a Bachelor's degree in journalism with a focus on photography from Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. A transplant from the DC-area, she still misses foliage and argyle but has happily adopted the official NorCal hobbies of visiting wineries, hiking local trails, and eating avocado.
