Pugh, TECI Receive Wellcome Leap Grant

Dr. Carla Pugh and the Technology Enabled Clinical Improvement (TECI) Center are the recipients of a grant from Wellcome Leap, a global "health breakthrough network." Their research project—titled "Advanced Quantification and Acquisition of Surgical Skills Using the Wearable Sensing System"—is part of the SAVE Program. SAVE stands for "Surgery: Assess/Validate/Expand."
Drs. James Korndorffer and Teodore Grantcharov are Co-PIs on the project. The team also has three collaborators: Arctop Inc, Surgical Safety Technologies and Academy for Surgical Coaching.
Several other Stanford faculty are also part of the SAVE program. Drs. Hyongsok Tom Soh in the Department of Radiology and Serena Yeung in the Department of Biomedical Data Science are also PIs on Wellcome Leap projects and Dr. Stefanie Sebok-Syer of the Department of Emergency Medicine is co-PI on the project "Transforming Surgical Training Using Precision Education" with Dr. Brian George at the University of Michigan. Department of Surgery Director of Global Engagement Dr. Tom Weiser serves as the Program Director.
According to Weiser the program has multiple goals including decreasing the amount of time it takes to acquire minimally invasive surgical skills by creating new training models and using big data and machine learning to predict patient deterioration after surgery.
