Dr. Dirbas Named Faculty Scholar of Breast Surgery
October 30, 2024
Dr. Frederick Dirbas has been named the John and Ann Doerr Faculty Scholar of Breast Surgery.
“An appointment as a faculty scholar is a great honor at Stanford University School of Medicine,” Dead Lloyd Minor wrote in his letter to Dirbas. “Faculty scholar awards recognize and celebrate your many accomplishments.”
Dirbas joined Stanford’s Division of General Surgery Breast Section almost 30 years ago.
“I'm deeply appreciative of the acknowledgement of my efforts to support Stanford breast surgery,” said Dirbas. “This opens up exciting new possibilities for our clinical and fledgling breast cancer bench research programs!”
Dirbas initiated Stanford's interdisciplinary research program investigating the merits of FLASH radiotherapy for breast cancer and received a pilot grant from the Stanford Cancer Institute and, more recently, a 2-year grant from the California Breast Cancer Research Program for FLASH RT. Dirbas is a co-investigator on Dr. Aaron Newman's NIH R01 grant studying breast cancer stem cells in the triple negative lineage and the PI on a research agreement between the Stanford Cancer Institute and Beyond Cancer to develop a Phase II study for use of ultra high concentration gaseous nitric oxide for treatment of solid tumors.
“We are delighted that Dr. Fred Dirbas has been named the John and Ann Doerr Faculty Scholar of Breast Surgery,” said Division of General Surgery Chief Dr. Electron Kebebew. “This is a tremendous and well deserved honor given Dr. Dirbas’s national stature for his clinical expertise and innovations in optimizing breast clinical care.”
