The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons held their annual meeting in Tampa, FL this year on May 9-12. Faculty and trainees from Stanford’s Division of General Surgery Colorectal Section participated in the conference. 

Highlights: 

• In addition to presenting on AI at the Pelvic Floor Consortium, Dr. Brooke Gurland led a session on Rectal Prolapse Workup and Treatment

Dr. Aaron Dawes sat on the expert panel at three different sessions including “The Challenges of IPAA in the Obese: Best Practices for Optimization and Intraoperative Technique” 

• Before repping Stanford and (the great state of) California in Colorectal Family Feud, Section Chief Dr. Cindy Kin proffered her expertise on prehabilitation in a session on preventing surgical site infections. 

• General Surgery Residents Drs. Jenny Shearer and Bona Ko, who will be pursuing a fellowship in colorectal surgery when she graduates next month, both presented abstracts on pelvic health. 

The 2027 ASCRS Annual Scientific Meeting is scheduled for May 22–25, 2027, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Bio

As the Director of Communications for Stanford Surgery, Rachel Baker tells the stories of her department's faculty, staff, and trainees. With the help of an amazing team of content creators, she produces and curates original articles, photos, videos, graphics, and podcasts. She works with each division, center, program, and lab within her purview to define their audience and reach their goals while maintaining a consistent brand voice. She also offers both 1:1 and group education on a variety of topics including media training, using social media to advantage, and presentation refinement. Rachel holds a Bachelor's degree in journalism with a focus on photography from Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Strategic Communications from the University of Maryland.
