Dr. Weiser Promoted to Professor

Dr. Thomas Weiser has been promoted to the rank of Clinical Professor of Surgery effective January 1, 2023. Dr. Weiser is a trauma specialist and surgical intensivist in the Division of General Surgery. He also serves as the Department's Director of Global Surgery.

"Tom has dedicated his career to improving the surgical care for patients around the world," said Department Chair Dr. Mary Hawn. "We’re so proud of the amazing contributions he has made to training the next generation of global surgeons and leading programs to make care better for patients receiving surgery in low-resource environments."

Dr. Weiser focuses on the quality of surgical care and strategies for improving the safety and reliability of surgical delivery in resource-poor settings. From 2006-2009, he was part of the World Health Organization’s Safe Surgery Saves Lives program where he quantified the global volume of surgery and created, implemented, evaluated, and promoted the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh as well as the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa. He is also the Consulting Medical Officer for the nonprofit Lifebox.
