INSIDE: Surgical Education Week 2026

This year’s Surgical Education Week took place April 28 – May 2, 2026 in Atlanta, GA. The annual event is hosted by the Association for Surgical Education (ASE), the Association of Program Directors in Surgery (APDS), and the Association of Residency Administrators in Surgery (ARAS). 

Stanford Surgery faculty and trainees presented on a variety of topics: 

• General Surgery Residency Program Director Dr. David Spain moderated a panel titled “Recruitment Considerations in a Changing Landscape” 

• Surgical Education Fellow Dr. Stephanie Seale presented “Evaluating and improving the quality of written feedback on end-of-rotation evaluations of residents” for which she won the APDS’s Best Presentation Award 🏆 

• Surgical Educational Fellow Dr. Souma Kundu presented “A Mixed-Methods Study of End-of-Rotation Evaluations of General Surgery Faculty by Residents” for which she won the ASE’s Best Presentation Award 🏆

• Andrew Friedman, a Howard University Medical Student and 2025 HBMC-REACH mentee of Dr. Cara Liebert presented “Validity evidence for entrust platform for assessment of breast and pediatric surgery EPAs” 

• Indiana University Resident and ENTRUST team member Dr. Alexa Engel presented “Qualitative analysis of exam format perceptions: membership of the college of surgeons 2024 exam” and “Examinee Perceptions on ENTRUST Implementation in High Stakes Credentialing Examinations.” 

Dr. Liebert and Dr. Dana Lin also hosted a dinner for GSEC/ENTRUST mentees and global faculty collaborators which included Drs. Mulugeta Tenna and Birhanu Ayana from the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda.  

Next year’s Surgical Education Week will take place in San Antonio, TX from March 30-April 3, 2027.

Bio

As the Director of Communications for Stanford Surgery, Rachel Baker tells the stories of her department's faculty, staff, and trainees. With the help of an amazing team of content creators, she produces and curates original articles, photos, videos, graphics, and podcasts. She works with each division, center, program, and lab within her purview to define their audience and reach their goals while maintaining a consistent brand voice. She also offers both 1:1 and group education on a variety of topics including media training, using social media to advantage, and presentation refinement. Rachel holds a Bachelor's degree in journalism with a focus on photography from Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Strategic Communications from the University of Maryland.
