Drs. Rafeeqi & Taylor Win 2022 ACS Excellence in Research Awards

Two Stanford Surgery trainees have won Excellence in Research Awards from the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Talha Rafeeqi's abstract, "Use Of Niclosamide Ethanolamide (NEN) As A Mitochondrial Decoupler In Neuroblastoma" has been selected in the Pediatric Surgery category and Dr. Kathryn Taylor's abstract "Out-of-pocket Spending And Work Loss After Common Surgical Procedures Among Working-age Adults" has been selected in the Health Services Research category.

They will both be recognized during the 2022 Owen H. Wangensteen Scientific Forum Dedication, Excellence in Research, and Resident Research Scholarship session on Tuesday, October 18 at 8:00 am at the ACS's annual Clinical Congress.

In addition to being highlighted during Clinical Congress 2022 and a monetary prize, the Excellence in Research Award recipients are featured in a supplemental issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons (JACS).

This is the second year in a row for the Chiu Lab to win this award. In 2021, the award was given to General Surgery Resident Dr. Dupe Diyaolu for her abstract "RAS Inhibition Delays Neuroblastoma Tumor Growth and Genes Upregulated in Tumors with High RAS Expression Can Be Identified Using Gene Set Enrichment Analysis."

Dr. Rafeeqi is a research fellow in the Division of Pediatric Surgery and Dr. Taylor is a Resident in General Surgery.
