Dr. Knowlton Receives James IV Traveling Fellowship Award

Dr. Lisa Knowlton

Dr. Lisa Knowlton is the recipient of the 2023 James IV Traveling Fellowship award. Winners of the award are typically at the assistant or associate professor academic rank, have distinguished themselves in terms of their academic achievements, and are considered to be emerging leaders in surgery. The award will allow her to take two, 2-week trips over years 2024 and 2025.

According to their website, “The James IV Travelling Fellowship is designed to promote communication and collaboration in the surgical community. Travellers are both ambassadors representing their home countries, and conduits for the dissemination of knowledge. It is expected that travellers will promote collegiality and collaboration amongst our community of surgeons.”

Previous winners of the award from Stanford include Dr. Michael T. Longaker in 2000 and Dr. Thomas M. Krummel in 1996.

Knowlton is an assistant professor in the Division of General Surgery’s Trauma and Acute Care Section. In the past year, she has received an R01 from the NIH, won the AAST Canizaro Award, and been accepted into the AWS Leadership Program.

The James IV Association of Surgery was founded on October 17, 1957 by Ian Aird of London, John Bruce of Edinburgh and J. William Hinton of New York. to build ties between surgeon members.

Bio

As the Director of Communications for Stanford Surgery, Rachel Baker tells the stories of her department's faculty, staff, and trainees. With the help of an amazing team of content creators, she produces and curates original articles, photos, videos, graphics, and podcasts. She works with each division, center, program, and lab within her purview to define their audience and reach their goals while maintaining a consistent brand voice. She also offers both 1:1 and group education on a variety of topics including media training, using social media to advantage, and presentation refinement. Rachel holds a Bachelor's degree in journalism with a focus on photography from Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Strategic Communications from the University of Maryland.
