HPB Surgery Section Launches Video Library

July 24, 2025

Stanford’s Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery section has launched a video library to facilitate the distribution of HPB knowledge around the world.

“This library was spearheaded by Dr. [Brendan] Visser, who has been passionate about teaching and sharing the best surgery and clinical practices around the world.” said Dr. Juan Salazar, an HPB research fellow and chief video editor. “Throughout his career, he has focused on making high-quality surgical education more accessible-and this project is a reflection of that mission.”

In addition to Drs. Visser and Salazar, video contributions have been made by a host of HPB surgeons and fellows both past and present including Drs. Jon Harrison, Daniel Aliseda, Edmund W. Lee, and Amy Li.

“We are just getting started and have plenty more content on the way,” said Salazar. “Lately, we’ve been working on some exciting cases, like an ALPPS (Associating Liver Partition and Portal Vein Ligation for Staged Hepatectomy), an open duodenectomy and a robotic caudate lobe resection, to name a few.”

Videos on the website are separated by anatomy (Liver, Gallbladder, Duodenal, etc.) and then type (open, laparoscopic, or robotic). Due to the graphic nature of the content, all videos are age-restricted, so the viewer must sign-in to view. Popular videos so far include “Robotic Choledochal Cyst Excision & Hepaticojejunostomy” and “Laparoscopic Endogastric Resection of Endoluminal Tumors: Technique and Variations,” which already have hundreds of views.

Salazar hopes the library will educate and inspire learners at all stages

“It’s meant for anyone in healthcare with an interest in HPB surgery! Whether you are learning the basics or reviewing advanced operative techniques behind these procedures,” said Salazar.
