Tennakoon, Knowlton Receive California Firearm Violence Research Center Grant

August 20, 2024

Drs. Lakshika Tennakoon and Lisa Knowlton have received a grant from the California Firearm Violence Research Center at UC Davis. Almost $100k will fund their research project: “Leveraging natural language processing for identifying intimate partner violence using unstructured healthcare data.” The work will be focused on leveraging natural language processing to identify intimate partner violence using unstructured healthcare data.

“Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) impacts both our patients and healthcare providers. Stigma and fear often silence victims, exacerbating this public health crisis,” said Tennakoon. “This study addresses the challenges of identifying IPV cases in unstructured healthcare data. A machine learning (ML) model leveraging natural language processing (NLP) will be utilized.”

“The study’s outcome will contribute to developing a scalable solution that empowers healthcare professionals to identify and manage IPV cases effectively,” said Knowlton.

Tennakoon is a clinical epidemiologist and Knowlton is an associate professor in the Division of General Surgery's Section of Acute Care Surgery.
