November 15, 2019

Transplant surgeon Dr. Stephan Busque has received the Denise O’Leary Award. The award was presented at the Stanford Health Care (SHC) Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday, November 12, 2019.

"[Busque] is a surgeon, scientist and friend. He fully deserves this award. I am so happy for him," said Transplant Division Chief Dr. Carlos Esquivel.

The Denise O'Leary Award is presented each year to an outstanding physician at SHC. According to SHC CEO David Entwistle's office, Busque was chosen because of his "long history of exceptional performance in kidney transplantation and innovative program to introduce immune tolerance for kidney and pancreas transplants."

Busque obtained his M.D. from the University of Montreal in 1986, then completed the residency in general surgery at the same institution in 1991. He then completed a fellowship in abdominal transplantation at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco in 1995. He was recruited to Stanford University in 2001 to head the adult kidney transplant program, which is now ranked #1 in the country in outcomes.
