Dr. Ayala wins SSO/ACPMP Travel Award

Dr. Carlos Ayala, a resident in the General Surgery Residency Program, received a 2022 Travel Award from the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) and the Appendix Cancer Pseudomyxoma Peritonei Research Foundation (ACPMP) for his abstract "A33: Mucinous Epithelial Cell Secretion Drives Mucinous Ascites Formation in Pseudomyxoma Peritonei Patients."

The award includes a $1,000 check to help underwrite his attendance at the Advanced Cancer Therapies (ACT) conference where he will present his research. The ACT is being held in conjunction with the International Conference on Surgical Cancer Care in Dallas next month.

Ayala's translational work in appendiceal cancer/pseudomyxoma peritonei was mentored by Dr. Byrne Lee, a clinical professor in the surgical oncology section, and Dr. Hanlee Ji, an associate professor in the Department of Medicine (Oncology).
