Momeni Receives ASRM Outstanding Paper Award

January 27, 2020

Dr. Arash Momeni, an assistant professor in the Division of Plastic Surgery, is the recipient of this year's Outstanding Paper Award from the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery (ASRM) for his work entitled "Sensory Recovery After 1 Year From a Multi-Center Prospective Outcomes Registry."

"Breast skin numbness continues to pose a problem following ablative surgery for breast cancer and is inadequately addressed with standard treatment modalities," said Dr. Momeni.

In this multi-center study, Dr. Momeni and colleagues investigated the ability to restore sensation to the reconstructed breast at >1 year follow-up following autologous reconstruction. Superior results were noted following flap neurotization when compared to non-necrotized flap transfer. The investigation is ongoing to determine the efficacy of flap neurotization in a larger cohort with longer follow-up.
