A copy of 'Robert's Rules of Order' has been passed down by ASA secretaries.

Stanford Surgery had a significant presence at the 139th Annual Meeting of the American Surgical Association (ASA) in Dallas, TX this past weekend. Two faculty members were inducted as new members, and Department Chair Dr. Mary Hawn was nominated as Secretary of the Association.

“I am humbled to serve the ASA in the capacity of Secretary,” said Hawn, who was presented with an heirloom copy of Robert’s Rules of Order. “Looking at the past secretaries is like a who’s who in Academic Surgery!”

Founded in 1880, the ASA is the oldest and most august surgical association in the United States. The organization is highly influential in policy changes in academic departments, residency training, and surgery in the US.

“It is an honor to be elected as one of the 460 active members of the ASA,” said Dr. James Korndorffer, who was inducted into the association along with Dr. Arden Morris. “The opportunity to be a part an organization that has, and will continue to, advance surgery and surgical science is unrivaled.”

The association also appoints task forces to write recommendations and guidelines for critical issues in surgery.

“This year I took the lead on the document on Academic Advancement in Global Surgery: Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure. This was presented and accepted by the executive council and is now submitted for publication in the Annals of Surgery,” said Dr. Sherry Wren. “This is the blueprint on how academic surgery will evaluate faculty with global surgery contributions.”

Wren also organized and moderated the ASA’s Women in Surgery Breakfast on mentoring in the post #metoo era with the help of Southern Illinois University Professor Dr. Hilary Sanfey.

Additionally, Dr. David Spain spoke on a panel and former Department Chair Dr. Tom Krummel participated in the forum discussion “Challenges to Surgical Innovation” at the event.
