In recent years, the Department of Surgery has experienced tremendous growth and rejuvenation with promotions, new faculty and corresponding new clinical and research programs.
Today, the Department consists of seven divisions –

,
Emergency Medicine
,
General Surgery
(including Gastrointestinal Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Trauma and Critical Care services),
Pediatric General Surgery
,
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

- with more than 95 physicians and full time faculty and over 100 adjunct clinical faculty. The Department trains over 130 residents and fellows through residency programs in Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and fellowships in Hand Surgery, Cranio-facial Surgery, Breast Surgery, Transplantation, Vascular Surgery, and the newly created Surgical Innovation program.

Our faculty are distinguished by numerous national and international scientific presentations, visiting professorships and peer reviewed research awards and publications. The residency training programs of the Department attract outstanding students from the most prestigious medical schools in the country, and our own medical student teaching program in surgery stimulates a strong interest in surgery.

Our faculty practice and teach at several sites throughout the region including Stanford Hospital and Clinics, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Medical Center, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente/Santa Clara, and Good Samaritan Hospital. Many of our practices are multi-disciplinary in approach. For example, our hand service in the Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery is part of a team of surgeons from that division and the Department of Orthopaedics. Our transplant teams are made up of highly accomplished surgeons, internists and allied health practitioners from many facets of medicine.

The Department is on the cutting edge of innovation and research in several fields. We urge you to explore our web site to learn more about our exceptional research, teaching and clinical services.
